There is nothing Lancer wants more than a good fight, but his Master is unfortunately the cautious type who wants Lancer to survive by running away rather than die in battle and who prefers to actively maintain secrecy by the killing of all witnesses.
That's how, despite Lancer having no personal animosity for Shirou Emiya, he tried to kill him twice - and suceeded once.
With a desire for a fight above the desire for victory, and being denied both, Lancer's position in the war is not enviable.
His true name is Cú Chulainn, a hero found in the Ulster Cycle, found out when he released his cursed spear Gae Bolg, which can reverse causality to hit the heart no matter what.
He has quite the easy-going personality on the surface but can be a deadly serious enemy, able to kill innocents regardless of his own feelings on the matter.
Lancer is a Servant who is being sent out as a sort of scout to fight all other Servants and expected to return alive, meaning he must be strong indeed.
